Water sports and angling are enjoyed on the Meulspruit Dam, which is surrounded by a nature reserve. The dam is the starting and finishing point for the 23-km Imparani Hiking Trail. Hiking tours into the mountains surrounding the town are also available, where you can see San rock art and various species of indigenous plants and animals. One of the most exciting ways of crossing the rugged Maluti Mountain range into Lesotho is on the back of a Basotho pony. The traditional means of transport among the Sotho people, Basotho ponies are famed for their sure-footedness in mountainous terrain.
From Ficksburg you can depart by plane from Ficksburg Airport, 3 km north of the town, to the Katse Dam in Lesotho. The dam is a very scenic area and is situated 3000 m (9842 ft) high up in the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho. The dam is very popular for boating and fishing and is visited by thousands of tourists to Lesotho every year which have to pass through Ficksburg.
